Phakamisa was an empowerment project run in partnership with Wahl Hairclippers and Southcity Church. Four young men were trained up over a six week process in barbering and equipped to establish their own informal roadside barber shops. Volunteers from Southcity Church offered their professional skills of hair styling and cutting, marketing and business skills and carpentry to leave the four entrepreneurs with a means of income. All four have used these skills to supplement an income which has helped pay for studies for two of them and encouraged a third to develop a small home gym business with barbering as an added extra. The fourth supplements his income as a car guard by cutting hair near a taxi rank when he is not guiding drivers at Margate Beachfront.
